CHANKANAAB
The Chankanaab project proposes to revitalize a piece of land on the island of Cozumel, standing out for its location in an area rich in biodiversity, particularly in a dry mangrove that requires protection. The initiative seeks to balance ecological conservation with the creation of a productive space for tourists and the local community, responding to the island's tourist saturation and offering an authentic alternative that respects the natural environment.
Rather than replicating mass tourism models, Chankanaab aims to create a multi-functional space that allows Cozumel residents to take ownership of the site. The design includes an urban park with a “natural labyrinth”, walkways that run through the mangrove and areas of conviviality such as reading tables and observation points, promoting the connection with nature and the enjoyment of the environment, while generating complementary spaces such as a shopping mall and a glamping spa.
The main challenge of the project lies in the need not to intervene invasively in the mangrove. To this end, an architecture that respects the landscape is proposed, integrating a self-sustainable system that finances the maintenance of the park without affecting its accessibility for the community. This model includes commercial areas that generate income for the maintenance of the green space and maintain free access to the local population.
The architecture employs local materials such as wood, palm roofs and limestone, fusing the modern with the organic. The proposal is organized in two zones: a resort and glamping area with a wellness center, and an urban park that serves as a labyrinth of terraces and paths within the mangrove.
The design seeks to respect both tourist needs and the demands of the residents, promoting social interaction and the preservation of ecological balance.
