TANGLE
No one would doubt that a dog is part of what we call the “Natural” world, an abstract term that today has lost most of its meaning.
The dog comes from an evolutionary chain that begins with the wolf and derives in the wild dog. That is to say, the domesticated dog as we know it today, is part of a genetic experiment carried out by humans over many years; almost all of the existing breeds are part of a custom design to fulfill a specific task: hunt, collect, corral, protect, etc. The human being is a social being by nature, and the dog its best attempt to domesticate nature to fight it, “a man's best friend.”
Every dog's basic needs are: hygiene, sleep, physical activity, food, playing, potty as well its own space. The latter is taken care of by the dog scratching a hole in the ground creating a burrow, where preferably the sides and the back part must be covered for security and temperature means. Our version of the same, is a space shaped like the typical iconography of a human house, not satisfied with that, we must teach them all sort of unnecessary tricks, so they can share a family life and behave to the standards of a family member.
In an attempt for controlling the causes and effects of this world, we create objects and processes that allow us to gain the best part of two conditions: the natural and the artificial; the world of the “naturally/synthetic” where all of the uncontrollable variables are eliminated and everything is redesigned for the human comfort. Grass that doesn't need watering, an eternal material that does not have to be replaced, the possibility of determining aesthetics in a human being, are just some of our false ideas of how to generate “progress and evolution” In our evolution lies our vulnerability.
“TANGLE” represents a critique to these natural synthetic processes, redesignin a doghouse, one created using synthetic materials (polyethylene foam rollers) lined in felt and woven with the same technique used by some animals to weave their nests and burrows.
Dogs, small pieces of synthetic nature within the reach of any home...
