3D scanning: the new must-have for every architect
We use it at A-001 Taller de Arquitectura, and since then our work has become much less complicated. What I'm about to tell you not only saves us time, but also allows us to start our projects with a much more accurate basis.
1. What is a 3D scanner and how does it work?
A 3D scanner is a tool that captures the reality of a physical space in a matter of minutes. How does it do it? It uses a combination of radar and photography to scan the environment from different points. From that, it generates a point cloud, which is basically an ultra-precise recreation of the space, in 3D.
It's like taking thousands of photos with depth and stitching them together into a model that you can walk through, measure and use as a reference to project.
2. What exactly does it do?
The amazing thing about this system is that:
- It generates you a navigable 3D model of the scanned space.
- It is automatically uploaded to an online server, so you can access it from any device without having to install heavy software.
- You can view the space, move around it, take measurements, and even leave notes or tags at specific points.
3. What does it export?
The utility is not only visual. Once you have the scan, you can:
- Import it directly into your BIM software (such as Revit), with millimetric precision.
- Generate automatic plans from the model.
- Measure areas, heights, distances... without having to go back to the construction site.
4. What are the real advantages?
- All photos and scanning points are centralized in one place.
- Survey times are reduced from days to just a few hours.
- If you forget to measure something, you don't have to go back to the site: you enter the model and that's it.
- You can tag elements, leave notes, organize the info as you like.
- And the best part: you can review the work from your desktop, with impressive accuracy.
